The Social Media

On Tuesday, October 14, most Ghanaians woke up to the shocking revelation of a 16 year old boy who claimed to have been sodomized by his mentor, a senior doctor who allegedly started having anal sex with the SHS student when he was 15 years old. I'm sure you stood slack-jawed upon hearing it.

It all started on a social media, precisely, FACEBOOK- which is the only "book" some people read now. I may not need to give much insight about this but the long and short is, for both the 'prey' and the Paedophile they wish they can turn back the hand of the clock to undo the past but alas.

Doing autopsy of the news,(as presented by Manasseh) I believe this was an avoidable tragedy that befell this teenager. 'Must you ask why?' Well, report reveals that most Facebook post by the man were issues on 'gayism'. Could that not be suggestive enough? Or he was so naive?

But wait, that's not my headache now. It's about how these social media has turn to be the bane of people and still counting.

Permit me to reveal some interesting facts to you.

Over 50% of the world's population is under 30 years old.

96% of Millennial have joined a social network.

Facebook tops Google for weekly traffic in US

1 out of 8 couples in US married via the social media.

It took 38 years for radio to reach 50million users, 13 years for TV, 4 years for Internet and 3 years for iPod.

But hey, FACEBOOK ADDED OVER 200 million users in LESS THAN A YEAR. Yes I mean so, 200 million. Surprise?

If Facebook were a country, it would be the WORLD'S 3rd Largest.
1. CHINA
2. INDIA
3. FACEBOOK
4. US.......

What else?

80% of companies use social media for recruitment.

Ashton Kutcher & Britney Spears have more Twitter followers than; SWEDEN, ISREAL, SWITZERLAND, IRELAND, NORWAY & RONAMA.

Some universities have stopped distributing e-mail accounts instead, they are distributing; eReaders, iPads, Tablets...

60 million status updates happen on FACEBOOK daily.

Our social environment, auguably has been greatly transformed and so are we lucky. We no longer
search for the news/products/services, they do find us.

Facebook now lays claim to some 1.23 billion monthly users.
Come down to our homeland Ghana. There are 1.6 million Facebook users in Ghana as at 2012 (source: www.internetworldstats.com)

But the multi-million Ghanaian cedi question is, 'How many people are making good use of these media of reaching out to the world?'

In the words of Eric Qualman, "We don't have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how well we do it."

Now come to think of this, if 80% of companies use social media for recruitment, then is it not sad
that someone's status each day is uploading pictures of him/herself, eating mountain of 'akple' and then ask, 'any challenger?'?

If that is the case, then, what is the prospect of a young gent/lady, seeking for a reputable job and yet filtered his/her page with pornographic pictures/videos or even personal nude pictures?

Think of this too; if Ashton Kutcher & Britney Spears have followers more than populations of some countries, then what will be the kind of influence on their followers IF all their tweets are non-informing, non-educative, non-motivating...? I'm sure that willl be a prodoma, which will in future, have its full dose effect. Yet some people's updates are below the belt, insulting and attacking, (especially their ex & government) & nudity galore.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying your post shouldn't criticise the government constructively, but attacking is different from criticism.
Oh, less i forget, my coach told me the best option, if you won't block such a person is to unfollow. Because daily exposure to such things will have effect on you. Selah.

What do you think? I'm only reasoning with you.

And again, come to consider this, 'If Facebook were a country, it would be the WORLD'S 3rd Largest'. Meaning you and I will be its citizens. And if also what we post on facebook is what represents our ideas, then, how will country FACEBOOK be like, with the negative and irrelevant things that some do 'in' it?

Brooding over this teenager's plight, I wonder how many people actually do proper search about people before sending a friend request or accepting one. We must be well circumspect in this because, many are those who have their woes through the social media.

The social media has come to stay and you can't disconnect yourself. However, we have to use them in order to maximise our gains.

Remember, each post of yours is a PERSONAL BRANDING you are making. It speaks of you. It tells the employer, friends and many more of who you are.
Don't let it be your bane.
Do the postmortem analysis and you will agree with me.
